Within us all are countless voices, pulling in all sorts of directions. In our lives, we are constantly required to choose which to listen to. These are the conscious and unconscious choices that create and define our identities. Consequently, with each decision we make about who we are, we inherently make a decision about who we are not.
Over time, we see the results of those decisions. We look back on those voices and often make judgments on which ones we were right to leave behind, and which ones we may have silenced too soon. There are always mistakes, but if we can resist the temptation to linger in doubt, or lament past decisions, we can instead reconcile with the people we were.
Perhaps confidence in one’s self in the present, lives by remembering and honouring the selves of the past.
